Why We Need More Vacations

mexican_siestaShame on us Americans, we work too hard and take too few vacations.

Did you see the story in The New York Times last Sunday called, “Relax, You’ll Be More Productive”? Fascinating piece about how we can be more productive by – get this – taking afternoon naps and going on more vacations. The writer Tony Schwartz made me feel better about the many siesta I’ve been taking during this pregnancy.

He writes:

“A growing body of multidisciplinary research shows that strategic renewal — including daytime workouts, short afternoon naps, longer sleep hours, more time away from the office and longer, more frequent vacations —boosts productivity, job performance and, of course, health.”

And he cites a number of recent studies to back up his very un-American claims. Essentially, it’s proven that the brain needs periods of rest in order to concentrate. The golden number seems to be 90-minute work intervals. So take that afternoon walk or nap, and fer God’s sake, use your paid time off!

Here’s how to use it …

Holidays are the best! I personally like to use all my paid time off and maybe a little unpaid time off as well. I’ve found instead of taking really long holidays which you can only afford once maybe twice a year it’s nice to have lots of 2-4 day holidays so you always have something to look forwards to!

I like your approach! Our last trip, to St. Lucia, was shorter than normal at 5 days but it was just long enough to feel relaxed but short enough that we didn’t miss our daughter or work for too long. Going to try that some more, only trouble is that you can’t go anywhere that requires long travel time.
